Ice Cube Launches Retired NBA Player Basketball League

The triple threat Ice Cube is known for hip hop, movies and producing both with some amazing results. Looks like Ice Cube is thinking outside of the box again and this time wants to chance basketball for the better. Ice Cube is about the launch a new basketball league but he isn’t taking on the NBA in fact he’s bringing it back to its roots. The new league will be called BIG3 and appropriately named because it will be a 3v3 half court basketball league. The league will replicate pick-up games of basketball except his league will have 8 teams of 5, three players and two subs.

The news of BIG3 was first announced right after Roger Mason stepped down as the NBA Players Association Executive Director. Mason also played in the NBA himself from 2002 to 2014. He said he would be the president and commissioner of the new league. But that isn’t the only big name that Ice Cube has recruited. Many retired NBA players will be on the league rosters like Nine-time NBA all-star and 2006 champion Gary Payton, six time all-star Jermaine O’Neal, 2013 champ Rashard Lewis and 2003 champion Stephen Jackson have already agreed to play in the league. Other big stars are said to be finalizing their participation as you read this but the games promise to be an amazing blast from the past in the form of basketball that you’re probably most familiar with.

The inspiration came to Ice Cube when he was playing some pick-up basketball and asked himself, “‘Why isn’t this played on a pro level?’ It’s the most normal form of basketball. And from there it was like, ‘‘Yo, why don’t we make this happen?’” It is true that the most common form of basketball played is not the formal game with two full teams of 5 on a full court but half court games that you usually see in a local park. But for Ice Cube this league holds deeper meaning.

“I thought of this concept as a fan who got sick of seeing his heroes retire and not play anymore,” said Cube to The Vertical. “A lot of these guys can still play once they retire – just not the back-to-backs or four games in five nights.” Ice Cube designed the league to be a big easier on the players but still be fast paced and highly competitive. The league itself will be a touring league most likely during the off season in the summer. It will start this year on June 24th and run for 10 weeks.

It’s a great idea but a lot of work still has to be done. Ice Cube still has to lock down sponsorship and TV revenue. Whether or not this will be a one shot or a truly enduring league is still up in the air but this will definitely be good while it’s around.
