Terry Crews and His Porn Addiction

Terry Crews is the muscle bound comic relief in so many television shows and movies. Most notably, he is in the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine and had an unforgettable performance in White Chicks. Recently he took to Facebook and released a video that described a dark personal struggle. He admitted to having a porn addiction. For some people, this might not seem like much of an issue since most people watch porn to some degree. But Crews hit a low point and realized it was a serious problem. “If day turns into night and you’re still watching, you probably got a problem.”

Like with all problems, admitting it is the first step. He makes a painfully personal statement, “My problem with pornography is that it changes the way you think about people. People become objects. People become body parts. And things to be used, rather than people to be loved. You start to change the way you see people. You start to use people.”

According to several scientific studies, Crew’s confession actually has some merit. Studies have shown that watching porn alters your brain chemistry and with long term, these changes can be permanent. Other studies have shown that relationships that are porn free tend to be stronger with lower rates of infidelity and one study shows that increased porn viewership correlates with young adult males who go unmarried.

Crews is advocating for the awareness of porn addiction and encourages those who are afflicted to not go through it alone. He tells us, “By not telling people, it becomes more powerful. But, when you tell and when you put it out there in the open … it loses its power.”
